HERBIE MANN - THE WAILING DERVISHES

Price

$18.00

A vibrant and adventurous live album, The Wailing Dervishes captures jazz flutist Herbie Mann pushing genre boundaries by incorporating Middle Eastern, folk, and ethno-jazz elements into his performance. Recorded live at NYC’s Village Theatre in June 1967, Mann is joined by Roy Ayers (vibes), Chick Ganimian (oud), Rufus Harley (bagpipes), and an eclectic percussion lineup. Produced by Nesuhi Ertegun, this album is an early and compelling example of world music fusion that still feels fresh and unique today  .

AllMusic gave it 4½ stars, noting that it “chases after a fusion … jazz and the Middle East” and succeeds without compromise  .
